(Shakari's office: Shakari sitting at head of table,
then he gets up to walk)
Shakari - There are Internet reports of strange happenings
at one Mansbridge academy. In particular... a recently deceased young man has apparently been seen walking the halls there.
(Stands up and walks) And Marian Hackett of the biomorphic predatory disease agency has also been investigating for vampires
at this site. (Stops) I sense the convocation elders are up to something. (Walks again) You must go there and find out what
you can... and report back to me. (Stops at monster) Be discrete, stay hidden. But if anybody gets between you and your mission,
destroy them.
Monster
- Yes, master Shakari.
(Mansbridge academy: In Dr. Murdoch's Office, Murdoch
is at his desk writing)
Dr. Murdoch - This Experiment has proved trying. Hence
I welcome some quite time as the day school classes are cancelled for 24 hours... While I do their (dips pen) term
evaluations... and like wise, those of their night school counterparts.
(Malcolm and Sherry in lobby. Sherry walking back and
forth)
Malcolm - When's he coming?
Sherry - Hopefully never.
Malcolm - He's your father... you should be excited.
Sherry - Just because I share a bloodline with him doesn't
mean I'm genetically coded to like him. Besides, shouldn't you be worrying about your dad?
Malcolm - He can't make it today.
Sherry - It's a one-day off in 3 months and he's a no-show?
Malcolm - He's away on business, some important international
stuff. He'll call me from his satellite phone later this evening. (Car horn honks. Sherry stops passing)
Sherry - Well...theirs mine. (Smiles) How's my smile?
Malcolm - Good luck.
Sherry - (going to door) No, luck would have been him
not showing up at all.
(Sherry leaves and in walks a courier guy)
Malcolm - Uh, can I help you? (Courier guy goes over
to him)
Courier - I've a package for a Dr. Reginald Murdoch.
Malcolm - I can sign for it. (Courier shakes head) I'll
try to find him. (Walks away) Meanwhile, you can help yourself to some cookies and uh...
(Malcolm turns around and the courier is gone. The courier
is a monster, it is under a table and its sight is red. At the roadhouse: Sherry and her dad are at the counter eating.)
Dad - How does one eat these?
Sherry - You just dig in. Getting your hands messy is
part of the fun.
Dad - Woa, it is tasty. Your mother worries that you're
not eating. I'll report that she's right.
Sherry - She could've done the dutiful parental inspections
herself.
Dad - She was unavailable.
Sherry - Something’s never change.
Dad - Well like me, Sherry, she's busy making our living.
Sherry - That's right, huh... commercial real estates
booming in Asia. Yes, with her traveling all the time, you don't talk to her either.
Dad - Everyday. By e-mail.
Sherry - I have an e-mail address too.
Dad - Still with that sarcasm in your voice.
Sherry - Gee! I wonder where I got that from.
Dad - Well I can tell you one thing you didn't learn
from me, you didn't learn to think that it's cool to get kicked out of five schools in three years.
Sherry - So, I excel at underachieving, sue me.
Dad - That's a trait that you should learn to get over.
Learn to stop acting like the spoiled offspring of privilege. Learn to stop spinning in circles and get yourself headed on
a clear course.
Sherry - Maybe I don't like straight lines.
Dad - Waiting for some rich boyfriend to bail you out?
Sherry - He doesn't have to be rich.
Dad - Well Sherry, I'm not the bad guy here, all right?
I'm just trying to prepare you for life.
Sherry - Maybe my life isn't dependant on how many bunch
of diploma's on my wall.
Dad - Hey, it's not about having a P.H.D. Making a good
living is about character. It's about having what it takes.
Sherry - You know, I’m surprised you and mom were
able to find a hole in your schedules to conceive me.
Dad - You live in an unreal world, Sherry. An illusion
that's going to crumble around you.
Sherry - Thanks for the pep talk, dad. Can you take me
back now?
Dad - No. Come on we haven't finished eating, we're gonna
order some desert.
(Nighttime at the school. In Cellar: Drew is playing
a card game on computer. Merrill walks over to Drew)
Drew - This is pathetic. I can't even win against myself.
Merrill - Then play against me.
Drew - What are you up for? Your evaluation isn't until
after mine.
Merrill - Couldn't sleep.
Drew - Um.
Merrill - Karl, Marty and Essie are obviously sleeping
like babies.
Drew - Humm, well that's the reward of a clear conscience...
and demanding their interviews be done in their normal awake hours.
Merrill - Us volunteering to go first was probably a
bad idea.
Drew - Why? You’re worried you'll fail the interview
and Murdoch will send you home, Merrill?
Merrill - You don't get it... this is our home.
Drew - No. It's not mine. It's just a halfway house for
vampire freaks like us.
Merrill - This experiment is our only chance.
Drew - Says who? Murdoch? Vakaal? No one consulted me.
Merrill - There's a war going on out there in case you
haven't noticed. The Fury wants us salves to our bloodthirsty instincts. The mortals just want us dead.
Drew - Which leaves us between a rock and a hard place.
Merrill - It leaves us with a chance. We both know that
Shakari must be stopped.
Drew - As the leader of the Fury he's invincible. It's
only a matter of time.
(Upstairs: The monster sees in red. He goes to Murdoch's
Office door. Nick comes down stairs. The monster Courier sniffs at the door.)
Nick - Can I help you? (Courier looks at Nick) You got
a delivery or something? (Courier walks over to Nick, hands clipboard) That must mean you want me to sign for it, huh? Okay...
(Nick signs the board, the courier turns into monster,
Nick looks up and monster enters Nick’s body. Murdoch's Office: Drew sitting in front of Murdoch at the desk)
Dr. Murdoch - I'm curious to know what you think, you
gained so far from this experience.
Drew - How to avoid detentions and suck up to the teacher.
(They chuckle)
Dr. Murdoch - Definite human survival techniques. That's
encouraging. Anything else?
Drew - What, you want to hear that I’ve been transformed,
that I’ve curbed my primal instincts?
Dr. Murdoch - Only if it's true.
Drew - Well it isn't. And I still have all my self-destructive
urges.
Dr. Murdoch - You hate life so much?
Drew - (laughs) I'm dead in case you've forgotten. Look,
I didn't ask to be vampire. It wasn't in my game plan, wasn't my destiny.
Dr. Murdoch - How do you know? You were a bright kid
Drew. Your school records show (looks to folder) that you had great potential yet you, slacked off; you fell in with the wrong
crowd.
Drew - Get real, nothing I did or do matters.
Dr. Murdoch - You've believed that all your life, (stands)
becoming a vampire just made it easier for you to feel sorry for yourself.
(Malcolm going upstairs reading a book and eating an
apple. Possessed Nick is fiddling with the camera.)
Malcolm - You're up pretty late. What are you doing with
the camera?
Possessed Nick - Go away.
Malcolm - Come on; tell me what you're up to?
Possessed Nick - Go...to bed.
(Malcolm leaves. At Roadhouse: Sherry and Dad finishing
desert at counter)
Dad - Mmm! Yum.
Sherry - Should we order you another one?
Dad - Well your mothers not around... maybe we should.
Sherry - Why did you even bother coming?
Dad - Because you're my daughter Sherry.
Sherry - You make it sound like an obligation.
Dad - Well I want what's best for you.
Sherry - So why not let me take a year off and travel,
you know so I can figure out what I want to do with my life.
Dad - On whose expense account?
Sherry - I'm not asking you for money, you can't even
trust me to make my own decisions. You know why? It's because you’re afraid to make your own.
Dad - What!?
Sherry - For all your big bucks, and your big shot friends,
you're a coward underneath. You never took any chances; you never followed your heart. Instead, you took the safer route and
became a lawyer. How depressingly unoriginal.
Dad - Watch your mouth!
Sherry - Why? Am I hitting to close to home?
Dad - No on the contrary, you're displaying a stunning
ignorant of those facts considering the privilege life you lead.
Sherry - Oh do tell.
Dad - Okay. You are selfish and vain and have no regard
for anything except your own feelings.
Sherry - Okay. Time to go. (Gets up and puts on coat)
Dad - You sit down Sherry. We're not done talking.
Sherry - Yes... We are.
Dad - Sit down!
Sherry - No! I am through taking orders from you. You've
lost that privilege. (She leaves)
(In Cellar: Merrill looking at blood. Drew walks down
stairs)
Drew - Time for you’re one-on-one with Murdoch.
But I worn you, it's a highly over-rated experience. (Sits) Your mealtime isn't for 2 hours yet.
Merrill - Does being a vampire ever frighten, you?
Drew - Yeah at first, when I realized what I’d
become. But I got used to it.
Merrill - I never have. (Turns to Drew) The blood makes
me sick to my stomach.
Drew - But you drink it.
Merrill - To stay alive. Death frightens me more.
Drew - I'd welcome it.
Merrill - Why do you resist who you are? Why not make
the best of it?
Drew - Why not pretend the sun doesn't shine?
Merrill - I feel sorry for you.
Drew - Don't.
Merrill - I shouldn't keep Dr. Murdoch waiting. (She
leaves)
(Murdoch comes out of his office and sees Possessed Nick)
Dr. Murdoch - Nick? You're up late. (Goes over to table
to get tea)
Possessed Nick - Can't sleep.
Dr. Murdoch - Well I'm just about to have a cup of tea.
Care to join me?
Possessed Nick - Nope. (Possessed Nick starts to walk
over to Murdoch)
Dr. Murdoch - Not getting sick, are you?
Possessed Nick - No.
Dr. Murdoch - You want to talk about something?
Possessed Nick - No.
Dr. Murdoch - Well if you ever do, you know I'm always
here to listen. (Looks at Nick and knows it's not him by the eyes)
( Murdoch's office: Door shuts. Merrill comes from cellar.
She goes to Murdoch's desk and stands there. Then She starts to go back down to cellar and stops. She goes to hidden window
behind a picture. She looks though and notices split tea. She looks very worried. In Cellar: Drew and Merrill looking at a
tape meeting of Murdoch and Possessed Nick)
Merrill - He probably went to clean up after spilling
the tea.
Drew - Notice anything odd? The camera hasn't moved.
Like it's stuck.
Merrill - Who's with him?
Drew - The creep residence, that's who. (Clicks remote)
Merrill - Every camera is fixed on his office.
Drew - Something’s not right. Let's check it out.
(Possessed Nick at computer looking at Office and sees
Drew and Merrill come out of office.)
Merrill - Maybe he's in the kitchen.
Drew - Be careful.
Possessed Nick - (looking at screen) Vampire...
(In cellar: Drew and Merrill sitting on table in front
of TV.)
Drew - It's not like Murdoch to just disappear. Can you
pick up any of his thoughts?
Merrill - Nothing. But I have to be very close to him
to sense anything. (Drew mind travels to every room and finds him tied up in library) See anything?
Drew - Something’s very wrong.
Merrill - Look! (They see Possessed Nick at Office)
Possessed Nick - (Sniffing in Murdoch’s Office)
Merrill - What's he doing in Murdoch's study? What's
he doing?
Possessed Nick - (Sniffing. He looks at passage way door
and gets a chair)
Drew - He's found us!
Merrill - Not he, it.
(Possessed Nick slides the shield over then he hears
a noise and goes to stairs and scares Sherry)
Sherry - Nick, You scared me. (He follows her up)
Merrill - It's the Fury.
Drew - Shakari's found us.
Merrill - No. Just a scout. He has to be stopped.
Sherry - Okay, I'm leaving. (Drew runs off)
Merrill - Drew where you going?
Drew - He's not going to hurt her.
Merrill - Should we wake up the others?
Drew - No time! (He's gone)
Sherry - Nick, listen! I'm really not up for you being
cute right now, okay? Okay. (Cellar door opens and Nick goes to office)
Drew - Shakari will be please. But I'm alone here. There
are no others. Take me to him. (Merrill shows up)
Merrill - No. I wont let you do that.
Drew - Merrill... What have you done?
Merrill - We have to kill it. We can't let it go back.
(It leaves Nicks body and they fight with it until it's dead. Drew still sucks from it) Drew...Stop! We've killed it...Drew...Stop.
It's over. Over. Over.
Dr. Murdoch - How does one evaluate the progress of
a vampire? Is it only in their ability to curb their instincts? (Library: Drew and Merrill enter and untie Murdoch from
the stairs. Sherry's dad sits waiting for Sherry) With mortal students as well, progress is difficult to gauge.
(In Lobby: Sherry walks in her dad stands up)
Dad - Oh, last night I said something’s I regret,
and I'm sorry.
Sherry - I said some pretty awful things too.
Dad - Well there's a privilege that you are entitled
to... and that's being young. I have no excuse. Well, I guess I should be going.
Sherry - Dad? (She goes and gives him a hug) This doesn't
mean all is forgiven.
Dad - I know, I know, and I'll expect my daughter to
be a though negotiator. I just don't want to be the monster in your life anymore.
Sherry - I guess I'll have to create a new one. (Dad
leaves. Nick enters) You look terrible.
Nick - Yeah, I woke up all sprawled out over there on
the floor. Since when do I sleepwalk?
(In cellar: Drew and Merrill at a coffin)
Dr. Murdoch - In both worlds...vampire and mortal...evaluating
change is a never ending struggle, but a necessary one.
Merrill - Tonight you could of had your wish, and ended
it all. Instead, you chose to live.
Drew - For now. (They laugh)
Merrill - Nighty, night. (Leaves)
Drew - Night. (The monster goes up in flames on the table in the Cellar)
