(In Cellar: Murdoch coming down
steps with sword in hands. Drew is kneeling down on floor with hands in front of him. The others are around him wearing cloaks)
Dr. Murdoch – You are gathered
to witness the expulsion of on of your own. It is the wish of the Elders (Drew lifts head) that I pronounce on Drew for violating
the (stops) cardinal rule of the Mansbridge experiment.
Karl – (puts down hood) Shouldn’t
he have a trail or something? I mean… isn’t that the way things are usually done? (Others put down cloaks)
Dr. Murdoch – Drew, stand
and face your kin. (Drew stands up and turns around)
Essie – What will happen to
him?
Marty – Doesn’t he get
any last words at least?
Dr. Murdoch – Silence. It
is the command of the Elders that you will leave Mansbride after the stroke of midnight to wonder the earth in exile for the
rest of your days.
Karl – Don’t you think
that’s a little harsh for having the hots for some mortal?
Dr. Murdoch – The sentence
has been delivered. So it is willed and so it (taps sword on Drew's shoulder) must be.
Merrill – This can’t
be! This is not his destiny, nor mine.
Dr. Murdoch – Drew, do you
wish to say anything?
Drew – Yes, but not to any
of you. (Looks up at ceiling)
(In Cellar: After the sentence.
Drew is packing. Karl is with Drew)
Dr. Murdoch – The power
of choice can be a dangerous thing. For humans, it can mean the difference between success and failure.
Karl – I’m telling you,
it’s not right.
Drew – Leave it, Karl.
Dr. Murdoch – For
a vampire, it means the difference between life or a fate worse than death.
Karl – Even vampires are in
tiled to a defence.
Drew – I pleaded guilty. End
of story.
Karl – Oh, so you’re
giving, just like that?
Drew – Just like that. (Marty
sits up in coffin.)
Marty – Heeey, no more pencils,
(gets out of coffin) no more books…
Karl – Lip it, Marty.
Marty – Think about it: out
of this black hole into the open road. What is wrong with this picture?
Karl – I don’t get you,
man. I thought you were the strong on around here, but this is…
Drew – It’s cowardice,
is that what you’re thinking? Hey, I believed in something and I went for it, okay?
Karl – Great. So now you’re
a martyr. (Marty yawns) Look, all I’m saying is it doesn’t have to end this way, that’s all…
Drew – And all I’m saying
is it does.
Karl – If you won’t
fight for you, then I will. (Drew puts on jacket)
Marty – Oooh, you guys are
giving me goose-bumps. (Drew leaves)
Karl – One of these days,
Marty - -
Marty – Anytime Karl. (Karl
leaves.)
(Merrill looking at Drew from a
distance. Essie goes up to her)
Essie – I know it’s
hard.
Merrill – Do you Essie…
How can you know what you’ve never felt? (Marty leaves room)
Essie – Look. You’re
not the first to ever be in love Merrill.
Merrill – Did you ever find
the one? In all your years as a vampire, did you?
Essie – Well I’ve had
my share of…
Merrill – Answer me…
Did you ever find someone and know, in your deepest soul, that he was it?
Essie – No.
Merrill – Drew is my “one.”
And there is nothing that can change that.
Essie – How can you be so
sure?
Merrill – What?
Essie – If Drew’s been
given the old heave-ho by the Elders, then maybe he isn’t the one.
Merrill – What are you saying?
Essie – His fate is sealed…
and you’re not part of it. (Essie leaves)
(Sherry’s room: Sherry taking
down Drew’s painting. Dillan looking in magazine.)
Dillan
– I guess that Drew phoney out of you life will leave you plenty of time for homework.
Sherry – (walking) So you
called it right. Scored 2 points for your side.
Dillan – If the streets taught
me one thing, it’s that if something seems too good to be true, it is.
Sherry – I can’t believe
I fell for all this romantic crap.
Dillan – That’s his
game.
Sherry – He lied to me…
at least he’s out of my life for good.
Dillan – Amen to that. (Sherry
at computer) I’m starved. (Drops magazine) Want anything from the kitchen?
Sherry – No, we’re not
allowed after hours.
Dillan – Says who?
Sherry – It’s the rule.
Dillan – Yeah well the rule
says everyone’s supposed to die but nobody wants to. Ain’t life a bitch? (Walks to door and opens it)
Sherry – (sighs) Yeah. (Dillan
leaves. Sherry typing on computer she looks to the door and then goes back to work and suddenly drew is in the doorway.) Get
Out!
Drew – Sherry, I need to…
Sherry – No just go or I’m
gonna call security.
Drew – You don’t understand…
Sherry – (Stands up) You’re
right, I don’t understand. (Walks) And I never would the way things were going.
Drew – You gotta listen to
me, I…
Sherry – You come and go as
you please! Even now, you’re sneaking around the school with out permission! You’re a creepy guy, you know that?
Drew – I can explain everything.
Sherry – Well it’s too
late. (He speeds to behind her)
Drew – You’re going
to listen. (He turns her around to face him and he holds her there) I’m not who you think I am.
Sherry – You got that right.
Drew – I’m not like
you, or any of your friends… The truth is, I’m not like any human you know.
Sherry – Okay, You’re
really creeping me out. (Pulls away from him)
Drew – Sherry – please
– if you loved me, even for a second, you’ll give me a chance here…
Sherry – You got 10 seconds.
Drew – I was trying to protect
you… that’s why all the lies, all the secrets… so I wouldn’t hurt you…
Sherry – Hurt from what? You’re
not making any sense!
Drew – I’m a vampire.
Sherry – Right, yeah (walks
around) and I bet your uncle Karl’s a vampire too and you all work at Skippy’s vampire grill but only at night
because you’d fry during the daytime… and you don’t have a cell-phone because a vampire wouldn’t be
caught dead with one - - how am I doing?
Drew – Mostly right.
Sherry – Yeah, and, and I
bet (Stops in front of him) you just couldn’t wait to suck me dry well, I got news for you. You already have, and there’s
nothing left in me to give. Now get out.
Drew – Sherry, you gotta believe
me, I’m…
Sherry – Out! (He speeds to
the other side room. She turns around) How did you… (He speeds up to her and stops)
Drew – Like I said, I’m
a vampire. And you’ll never have to see me again. (Speeds out of room)
(In Cellar: Karl and Merrill looking
through books. Essie walking around behind them)
Essie – Karl reading? I thought
I’d seen everything! (Stops)
Karl – It’s all here,
Essie! The complete book of vampire Jurisprudence. Hu-hum.
Essie – Jurisprudence…
why, Karl, that’s 4 syllables! So, all that law for a brutal sub-species like us, huh?
Karl – The long-term survival
of any society, even ours, is based on justice. Take that away: it collapses.
Essie – Since when did you
get so smart?
Merrill – Since Drew got busted.
Essie – Look, I don’t
mean to pour salt on your legal wounds Karl, but the Elders word is final.
Karl – No – no –
no – no – no, look here, (points on page and reads) it clearly states that a vampire, regardless of his crime
is entitled to a full and proper defence.
Essie – (walks to Merrill’s
side) Why can’t you just let fate take it’s course.
Karl – Because he did what
we all think about… it could have been any of us, Essie.
Essie – But it wasn’t.
(Merrill thinks off to Sherry and stands up) Don’t interfere if that’s what you’re thinking?
Merrill – What are you talking
about?
Essie – I can’t mind-read,
but I’ve got great instincts and they tell me you’re up to something.
Merrill – I’m just helping
Karl.
Essie – Then leave her out
of this.
Merrill – Who?
Essie – Drew’s dearly
beloved.
Merrill – Mmm. The one responsible
for all of this.
Essie – Merrill, Drew crossed
the line, not Sherry.
Merrill – She changed everything.
Essie – Don’t do anything
foolish, Merrill or you’ll end up like Drew… (Whispers in Merrill’s ear) Maybe worse. (She leaves and Merrill
looks up at roof)
(In Sherry’s room: Sherry
in her room walking around. All of a sudden she gets a pain in her side and she screams in pain and falls to the ground. In
the Office: Drew is with Murdoch)
Dr. Murdoch – I was about
to write my final entry on you.
Drew – So I get immortalized
after all.
Dr. Murdoch – Let’s
cut the sarcasm. This is not a happy occasion for me, Drew. And I can’t imagine that it is for you either.
Drew – Let’s just say
that it’s my destiny.
Dr. Murdoch – No – It
didn’t have to be. You chose this path. You brought this on yourself.
Drew – And those are your
final words? (Starts to get up. Murdoch stands up all-mad)
Dr. Murdoch – Who do you think
you are? You had the chance for something better (Goes over to Drew) and you threw it away. For what? For love? Maybe. Or
lust? It doesn’t even matter. The point is you let go of who you really are. (Drew sits back down)
Drew – So it was a lecture
after all.
Dr. Murdoch – (Sits at desk)
I write this with a heavy heart. One of our own is leaving Mansbridge… (Dillan storms in and see’s Drew)
Dillan – Dr. Murdoch…
(They look to her) Drew?
Dr. Murdoch – What is it Dillan?
Dillan – Sherry’s not
well.
Dr. Murdoch – Alright. We’ll
resume this later. (Gets up and goes out door. Dillan stands there. Drew gets up from chair and Dillan leaves.)
(In Cellar: Marty walks over to
Drew.)
Marty – You still can’t
get over her, huh… - - even now.
Drew – I don’t wanna
talk about it.
Marty – That’s okay,
there’s gonna be a lot of time for that later.
Drew – What d’you mean?
Marty – I’ve been chosen
to be your guide.
Drew – For what?
Marty – Well, (walks to face
Drew) the Elders want me to take you to the coast… after that; you’re on your own. Frankly, it’ll be nice
to get a couple of days out of this joint.
Drew – I can take care of
myself.
Marty – The way they figure
it: the Fury gets a hold of you, it’s all over for this cozy little experiment.
Drew – And, ah, you’re
supposed to protect me from the bad guys right?
Marty – Something like that
yeah.
Drew – You tell them that
when I walk out of here, I walk out alone, okay? (Walks a way a little and Marty comes up from behind)
Marty – I’ll be back
at midnight. (Leaves)
(Drew mind travels to Sherry. In
Sherry’s room: Sherry is in her bed. Murdoch is at her side feeling her forehead. Dillan is also at her side too.)
Dr. Murdoch – She’s
running a fever.
Sherry – Ah, it hurts…
Dr. Murdoch – Sh-sh! I’m
gonna call a doctor. (Gets up) Stay with her. (He leaves)
Dillan – Like I have other
plans…
Sherry – Drew.
Dillan – It’s gonna
be okay. (Takes her hand)
Sherry – (she’s moaning.
Drew mind travels back to cellar)
(In Cellar: Drew starts to walk
and Merrill is behind him standing there he turns to Merrill)
Drew – I don’t think
I can take any more sympathy.
Merrill – That’s not
what I’m offering.
Drew – Then what?
Merrill – This is not how
I saw it… you leaving like this…
Drew – It’s the way
it is. You’ll live with it. (Walks past her)
Merrill – Karl doesn’t
want to. I don’t want to (stops) - - and I won’t!
Drew – What are you saying?
(She turns her back to him)
Merrill – It can’t end
like this.
Drew – Why not? …Merrill,
what is it?
Merrill – If you could read
my mind, then I wouldn’t have to say it.
Drew – (walks to her) Say
what?
Merrill – Y-your destiny,
and my destiny… (Spins her around and grabs her shoulders)
Drew – Look at me. Look at
me! Say it…
Merrill – There can’t
be anyone else, only the one… don’t you understand?
Drew – (lets her go) What
have you done? (Speeds away)
Merrill – Drew?
(Drew under the stairs. Murdoch
and the Doctor talking on the steps)
Dr. Murdoch – But I don’t
understand - - how could it escalate so quickly?
Doctor – I’m at a loss,
but my best guess is a burst appendix. (Starts to go up steps)
Dr. Murdoch – But she’ll
be alright…
Doctor – (Stops) I’ve
called an ambulance, but with the poison already spreading through her body, we could lose her. (She goes up steps. Murdoch
goes down steps to office. In Cellar: Merrill standing there. Karl all excided)
Karl – Yes! (Writes in book)
I think I figured the way to defend him.
Merrill – Will Murdoch by
it?
Karl – It’s all in the
presentation, my dear. That’s what passes for justice in the real world. (Chuckles)
Merrill – I can’t lose
him, Karl.
Karl – Hey, we won’t.
(In Sherry’s room: Doctor
at her bedside. Drew in doorway.)
Sherry – (She moans. Drew
gets out of doorway and Marty is standing there)
Drew – She’s dying.
Marty – I’m sorry, but
it’s time.
Drew – She needs me.
Marty – I know how you feel;
life’s dealt you a hand, right? But that’s the way it is, so let’s go.
Drew – Then she’s coming
with me.
Marty – Am I hearing what
I think I’m hearing?
Drew – Marty, please…
(Places hand on his shoulder) For your own good, stay out of this.
Marty – You screwed up once
Drew - - (Grabs Drew’s shoulder) Don’t screw it up again.
Drew – Touch me again and
I swear I’ll…
Marty – You leave me no choice.
(Grabs Drew but Drew grabs Marty and pushes him all the way back. The door shuts and Drew smacks Marty against it and Marty’s
out cold.)
Drew – Sherry! (Drew pretends
to be Murdoch) Doctor, Paramedics are here. (She gets up and goes to doorway)
Doctor – Let’s get them
right up, there’s no time. (Drew is then inside room as the doctor turns around Drew puts her in a trance and then goes
to Sherry’s bedside.)
Drew – Sherry… (Sherry
moans) It’s me, Drew. (She moans again and Drew looks back) I’ve come to take you away. There is a way that we
can be together forever… But you have to make a choice…
Sherry – Drew…
Drew – I can give you eternal
life, but with it comes eternal darkness. (Looks back at door) tell me what to do, my love please, I need to know what to
do…
Sherry – Drew…
Drew – Please, Sherry…
(Drew cries and vamps out with blood tears on his face) Forgive me… (He turns her head to the side and goes to her her
neck. The doctor comes out of trance and Murdoch shows up. Drew has long gone. Murdoch looks to Sherry and see’s her
dead. In Office: Murdoch at desk with tears in eyes. Dillan is there too.)
Dillan – So, hum, I guess
you’ll be… closing down the school (sits down) for a few days, give everyone a chance to grieve…
Dr. Murdoch – I don’t
know…
Dillan – Life sucks sometimes,
doesn’t it?
Dr. Murdoch – (laughs) Yes…
It does.
Dillan – Um – (Stands
up) is it alright if I sleep on the couch out there? I don’t think I can handle sleeping in her room just now. (He stands
up too)
Dr. Murdoch – Why don’t
you use mine…
Dillan – Really?
Dr. Murdoch – Yes. (They walk
over to the couch in office and she sits down. In cellar: The Vampires are at the table with Drew) I’m sorry Drew, I
truly am, but it’s time.
Essie – Hasn’t he suffered
enough?
Dr. Murdoch – The death of
a mortal is outside our providence.
Marty – Hardly. Can’t
you see the man’s still hurting?
Merrill – We’re all
hurting.
Dr. Murdoch – Believe me,
I understand you have strong feelings about this…
Karl - …It’s more then
feelings. It’s our rights as vampires.
Dr. Murdoch – Karl, this isn’t
the right time for this.
Karl – Oh, yes it is, Dr.
Murdoch. I’ve done some homework here (Opens book) and I must declare these proceedings out of order.
Dr. Murdoch – You what? The
Elders have decreed that…
Karl – The Elders have decreed
that we must live by the rules. Those rules include the rights of each of us to a fair trial by a jury of our peers…
Dr. Murdoch – He admitted
his guilt.
Karl – That does not (stands
up) wave his right to a proper defence.
Essie – Go Karl.
Karl – What was Drew’s
crime really? (Walks over to Drew) He loved a woman… a mortal woman… and he was prepared to risk everything for
that… was that the result of a baser instinct, a predatory nature? (Walks in past of Drew and stops) Dark savage impulses?
No! It was a result of that most common of all afflictions: human frailty! I submit that Drew French’s crime is none
other than human weakness. (Everyone goes over to Drew one by one) You and the Elders have condemned Drew for his new found
humanity, the very thing the experiment hoped to achieve… I rest my case.
(Murdoch kind of smiles. Everyone
is congratulating Karl and Drew.)
Karl – (Laughing)
Dr. Murdoch – Thanks
to Karl’s impassioned plea, the Mansbridge experiment has been spared its first casualty.
Merrill – I’m glad to
have you back. (They look at each other)
Dr. Murdoch – This
sudden turn of events, though welcome, has convinced me all the more of the fickleness of fate, (Drew walking away) if
such a thing exists at all.
(Karl and Marty sitting together.
Drew at Coffin.)
